Breaking a Soul Tie with a Work Spouse1

A young husband and his wife had been fighting about his relationship with a woman at work so they asked if we would meet with them. She was jealous of what she called his “work wife” but he adamantly denied any wrongdoing. He said they were just friends. To put an end to the “he said, she said” argument, I told them we could settle the question once and for all by discernment.

I asked him to close his eyes, get in an attitude of prayer, think of his coworker, and feel what it felt like in his gut. As soon as he thought of her, he felt the attraction in his gut and a seducing spirit manifested powerfully. He opened his eyes abruptly saying, “Wow! That’s demonic!” You don’t have to wonder if you have an unhealthy emotional attachment. It’s discernable. We prayed with him as he received forgiveness and broke the soul tie.

Deliverance from Pornography

Pornography results in soul ties. It may not include a relationship with a real person but it does involve fantasy relationships. Late one afternoon a few years ago, a young man from my church called. Rob seemed both embarrassed and relieved when I answered the phone. He confessed that he had been looking at porn on the Internet for a while and now felt hooked by it.

Pornography creates fantasy relationships.

I had recently spoken about the topic in a sermon, so Rob was emboldened to reach out for help. Most pastors don’t teach about sex and sexual sin from the pulpit; however, I believe church leaders should freely discuss practical moral and cultural issues impacting believers and give them solutions.

As I prayed with Rob, we dealt with emotions and demonic hitchhikers2 until he was free. A spirit of addiction lifted off in a release that was perceptible to both of us. Rob later described the working of this spirit in his life: “The pull was unnatural. I felt like it controlled me, making me do what I didn’t want to do!” Rob agreed to touch base with me regularly for accountability.

Unfortunately, Rob’s situation is all too common. Pornography has become one of the most destructive forces in society today. It is easy to access, and hard to resist. Even if the porn user manages to conceal his or her behavior, addiction is a difficult bullet to dodge. Fortunately for Rob, he sought help before his problem became severe.

Willpower is not as strong as spiritual forces. Spirit, good or bad, always wins. Methods and programs leading to abstinence can help weaken a bad habit, but true freedom comes only when evil spirits no longer have legal ground. “Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, so a curse without cause does not alight” (Proverbs 26:2 NASB).
